The Year Was 1990......

....and I was a junior in high school.  At this point of my life I had been playing guitar for a couple of years, and music was a huge part of my life, as it is today, not as much, but still an intrical part.  I didn't write a blog last week, and as I was trying to figure what I would write about, I thought maybe a blog about the music from the 90's.  From the last dying days of "hair metal" to the rise of grunge and hip hop. Definately a lot of different types of music that came to the forefront.

I was doing research, alright, I know that sounds contrived, but I really did look some of this information up.  I google, "Top ten pop songs of the 90's".  I figured that Billboard Magazine would be the first to pop up, which it was, but it gave a list of 100 songs of 1990.  So I found a website, digitaldreamdoor.com, which had a top ten of 1990, and the rest of the decade.    I thought it would be cool to not only refresh my memory, but comment on these songs.  So for the next few weeks, I will be going through the 90's, going over these hit songs.  Honestly, after looking at the list, I don't remember some of these, but for 1990 I'm good.

So here it goes....
Number 10....Been Caught Stealing by Jane's Addiction

I do remember seeing the video for this on Mtv, and thinking, "what the hell?"  Strange video, strange band, just kind of weird.  Listening to this some twenty six years later, I don't really dislike it, it's not something I will listen to, but if it was on the radio, I wouldn't necessarily turn it.

Number 9...Gonna Make You Sweat by C&C Music Factory

Who cannot forget this?  I think it was permantly running through my ears, tons of airplay.  Another semi Milli Vanilli controversy with this one.  Martha Walsh of the Weather Girls sang the hook, but was credited to Zelma Davis.  A lawsuit happened, it was settled.  About all I got on this one, although my kids enjoy the cast of Evan Almighty dancing to this as the movie credits role.

Number 8....Mama Says Knock You Out by LL Cool J

I was never a big fan of hip hop, sorry if that ruins my street cred.  This wasn't a bad song, didn't listen to it much.  Sure it was thumping through a lot of 15 inch Rockford Fosgates in 1990.

Number 7...Vision of Love by Mariah Carey

Ahhh, pre boob job Mariah Carey, pre Super Diva Mariah.  I think we were all still wondering where she came from.  Just out of nowhere she was everywhere.  Then you find out, she's married to Tommy Mottola.  Great singer, with a big voice, but from all accounts bigger attitude.  Decent song, but not my cup o' tea.

Number 6...Man in the Box by Alice in Chains

Now this is more like it.  I can honestly say that I wan't a huge fan of this song, but learned to love it.  I think the band was underated, and just couldn't get far enough from Layne Staley's demons.  I think most, if not all, of my friends will remember this as ECW's Tommy (or was it Terry?) Dreamer's theme music.

Number 5...  Groove is in the Heart by Deee-Lite

One of my favorite songs of 90, wait, what did I type that?  I will give credit where it is due.  This is a dang catchy tune.  I'm sure that dance clubs around the world are still playing this, to me, it doesn't sound dated.

Number 4...Vogue by Madonna

Do you want to Vogue, no Madonna I don't.  Twenty six years later, she's out there still touring taking falls on stage and what not, but she's still out there.  I can't say I'm a fan of her music, but you can't deny her success.

Number 3...U Can't Touch This by M.C. Hammer

Still don't like this, sorry to those who do.  It was everywhere, hopefully Rick James got to use some of the royalties to buy some blow.  You know cocaine is a helluva drug.

Number 2...Enjoy the Silence  by Depeche Mode

Just by the title, I couldn't recall this song.  Shouldn't this song have came out when the Flock of Seagulls where the happening band?  I mean what is this doing in my 90's?  My one memory of Depeche Mode, is my friend Opie seeing a tape on c.d. and pronouncing their name DEE-PEACH-E mode.

and the big reveal.....

NUMBER 1....Nothin' Compares 2 U by Sinead O'Connor

Who's the bald chick?  I bet she would be hot with longer hair?  That's some things I heard back in 90.  Regardless of what you think of her and her antics, this was (and is) a great song, still is.  But then again it was wrote by the warped musical genius we know as Prince.

So there you go, the top ten songs of 1990 as compiled by http://digitaldreamdoor.com.
It was fun looking back on these songs, and reminded me of how varied the music was back then.  I guess it still is today, but at any moment you could here these songs playing on the same station.  Although there have always been station playing pop music, it seemed when I was younger, the pop music was more varied.  Next week, (hopefully) I will be looking at the top 10 of 1991.  The Class of 91 rules!
